Late 19th–Early 20th Century Indian Folk Art Devotional Figure – Indian Folk Figure

£105.00

A wonderfully evocative example of Indian folk art, this carved wooden figure likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and represents a traditional devotional object, possibly intended for use in a domestic shrine or rural temple.

The subject is a standing female figure, naively painted in warm, earthy tones, and shown holding a stringed instrument – possibly a sitar or tanpura – in a modest yet expressive pose.

The figure measures approximately 17.5cm in height.

The surface exhibits notable age-related wear, and there is a clear sign of a historic repair: the instrument, which would originally have been held in both hands, is now affixed to the chest via a small nail.

This thoughtful repair suggests the figure held enough spiritual or personal significance to warrant preservation rather than disposal.

Condition Notes:

  • Surface wear and paint loss consistent with age.

  • Evidence of a past repair to the arm.

  • Instrument has been nailed to the chest in a later restoration.

  • Structurally stable and highly decorative.
